Experimental technology for accelerated formation of bog wood

Use of prepared solution and sealed covers (DREVO Timber Reserve)

Concept

Along with the traditional long-term storage of timber in natural reservoirs, the programDREVO Timber Reservemay include an experimental direction for studying accelerated methods of forming bog wood.

It is proposed to investigate the possibility of aging wood in a specially prepared aqueous environment inside hermetically sealed or semi-hermetic covers (capsules), allowing control of the main environmental parameters.

It is important to emphasize that this isexperimental research concept, the effectiveness of which must be confirmed by long-term tests on different types of wood.

The main idea:

Not to replace the natural staining of wood, but to explore the possibility of a more controlled process while preserving its natural properties.

Objectives of the study

The experimental system should allow the study of the influence of different conditions on:

change in wood color;

change in density;

mineralization;

resistance to biological degradation;

mechanical properties;

internal structure;

dimensional stability;

durability.

Design of the experimental capsule

Each barrel is placed in an individual or group sealed case.

The design includes:

outer protective shell;

internal retaining frame;

filling valves;

sampling valves;

air removal system;

transport fastenings;

sensors;

identification mark.

The shell material must be:

chemically inert;

UV resistant;

durable;

hermetically sealed;

suitable for many years of use.

Prepared solution

The solution should imitate the natural environment as much as possible, rather than aggressive chemical treatment.

Possible components for research:

purified natural water;

mineral salts typical for local water bodies;

natural humic substances;

tannins of plant origin;

natural organic acids in controlled concentrations;

suspension of finely dispersed mineral particles;

microelements.

The composition must be selected individually for each series of tests.

It is not recommended to use toxic substances, heavy metals or compounds that may pollute the environment.

Environmental control

The following are controlled inside the capsule:

temperature;

pressure;

pH;

electrical conductivity;

mineralization;

dissolved oxygen;

oxidation-reduction potential;

turbidity.

All data is automatically transferred toLiving Mountain Observatory.

Air removal

Before sealing, it is advisable to remove as much free air as possible from the internal volume.

This allows:

reduce oxygen content;

improve the contact of the solution with the wood;

reduce the risk of surfacing;

increase the stability of experimental conditions.

The following can be used for this:

vacuuming;

filling with solution from bottom to top;

gradual displacement of air by liquid.

Vacuum stage

An additional area of research is short-term vacuuming of wood before curing.

Expected effects:

removal of some air from the pores;

more uniform penetration of the solution;

reduction of the number of air cavities.

These effects require experimental confirmation.

Modular solution system

Instead of one composition, several experimental series can be used.

For example:

Serie A

As close as possible to natural river water.

Series B

Water with a high content of humic substances.

Series C

Mineral composition with natural salts.

D-Series

A composition that simulates the bottom conditions of swamps.

E-Series

Control series with normal water.

Duration of tests

The research is carried out in stages.

Checkpoints:

6 months;

1 year;

2 years;

5 years;

10 years;

20 years.

At each stage, a portion of the samples is removed for analysis.

Monitoring system

Each capsule is equipped with:

RFID tag;

temperature sensor;

pressure sensor;

leak indicator;

position registration system.

All data is stored in a digital passport of the sample.

Laboratory research

After extraction, the following are analyzed:

density;

humidity;

strength;

color;

microstructure;

chemical composition;

biological stability;

resizing.

The results are compared with naturally seasoned wood.

Advantages of the experimental system

fully controlled conditions;

the ability to compare different compositions;

independence from hydrological changes;

preserving the digital history of each sample;

reproducibility of experiments;

accelerated acquisition of scientific data.

Restrictions

It should be taken into account that, to date, there is insufficient scientific data confirming the possibility of fully replacing the long-term natural process of forming bog wood with such methods.

Therefore, this technology is considered solely as a research program, and not as a proven way to quickly obtain a material with the same properties.

Integration with DREVO Living Mountains

Experimental capsules can be placed:

in research pools;

on restored swamps;

in special tanks;

in laboratory hydromodules;

in the experimental sectors of DREVO Timber Reserve.

All results are combined into a single databaseMountain Digital Twin, which allows us to accumulate knowledge and improve methods for long-term storage of wood.

Project mission

The experimental sealed capsule technology is a scientific addition to the program.DREVO Timber ReserveIts goal is to understand which natural factors determine the formation of bog wood and whether it is possible to create controlled conditions that preserve its unique properties while increasing process reproducibility.

The knowledge gained can be used to develop new environmentally friendly technologies for storing wood, but natural long-term staining in natural conditions remains the standard for comparing results.
