Experimental pickling of shrubs
WOOD Shrub Reserve— scientific direction of the projectDREVO Timber Reserve, dedicated to the study of long-term storage of shrub wood in an anaerobic aquatic environment to study changes in their physical, chemical and decorative properties.
The goal of the program is to determine which shrub species are capable of producing material with high artistic, technological, or scientific value after many years of storage.
"Every type of wood has its own aging history. We want to understand it."
Main tasks
Study of anaerobic preservation processes.
Study of wood color change.
Density study.
Study of changes in fiber structure.
Study of natural mineralization.
Evaluation of decorative properties.
Formation of a collection of experimental samples.
Why shrubs?
The shrubs have the following characteristics:
denser wood in some species;
unusual texture;
beautiful color transitions;
complex fiber structure;
high decorative value.
After long-term storage they may be of interest for:
artistic carving;
manufacturing of tool handles;
musical accessories;
jewelry;
inlays;
collectibles.
Priority species
| Priority | View | Possible application |
|---|---|---|
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Boxwood (Boxwood) | High-density wood for carving and precision work |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Yew (Taxus baccata)* | Scientific research and artistic products(use only legally sourced timber without harming protected populations) |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Red deer (Male horn) | Very dense wood for handles and decorative items |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) | Decorative wood with an interesting texture |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Hazel (Corylus avellana) | Furniture parts, wicker structures, artwork |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Beresklet (Euonymus europaeus) | Fine carving and experimental pieces |
| ⭐⭐⭐ | Lilac (Common lilac) | Decorative wood with beautiful coloring |
| ⭐⭐⭐ | Yellow acacia (Caragana arborescens) | Durability and structure study |
| ⭐⭐⭐ | Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) | Density and stability study |
| ⭐⭐⭐ | Juniper (Juniperus spp.) | Aromatic wood, decorative products |
Research classes
| Class | Target | Shelf life |
|---|---|---|
| D | Primary tests of various types and conditions | 2–5 years |
| C | Study of physical changes | 5–15 years |
| B | Evaluation of decorative and mechanical properties | 15–30 years old |
| A | Long-term scientific collection | 30–100+ years |
Parameters under study
After extraction, the following are analyzed:
color change;
density;
hardness;
strength;
shrinkage;
dimensional stability;
resistance to biological degradation;
processing features;
decorative qualities.
Possible areas of application
artistic carving;
knife and tool handles;
musical instruments and accessories;
jewelry;
inlay;
collection materials;
museum exhibits;
scientific research.
Scientific value
There are virtually no systematic studies on long-term anaerobic preservation of wood from most shrubs. This allows for the creation of:
international database;
reference collection of samples;
property change catalog;
Recommendations for long-term storage of various breeds.
Integration with DREVO Timber Reserve
Experimental pickling of shrubs is becoming a separate research module, complementing the wood preservation program. This could potentially lead to the development of new materials with unique aesthetic and technological properties, while simultaneously expanding knowledge about the long-term preservation of various wood species.
